› Forums › Herpes Questions › What is my risk of contracting Herpes2?
I have been tested negative for both Type 1 and 2 (last week). My fiance is positive for Type 2 (tested 1 month ago). His DR. said he’s a carrier of the herpes virus but is asymptomatic. His first wife contracted Herpes in 1985 while pregnant with their youngest daughter. She also had a boyfriend while she was married to him (throughout their 20+ year marriage). They abstained from sex for a period of time during her one and only episode of herpes and then resumed unprotected sex. Neither one contracted herpes again. They divorced in 2003 and he remarried within a year. He and the 2nd wife had unprotected sex for the 7 years they were married and she never got herpes. Nor did he.
What are the chances I will contract herpes from him, an asymptomatic carrier of the Type 2 virus? We have not slept together and won’t until we are married. I realize this sounds stupid, but, I abhor the thought of having protected sex at all times with him. If he has no breakouts how can I tell he’s having an episode? He says he’s had no episodes, ever.
Would it behoove us to come in together for a consultation/counseling?
I appreciate your help. Thanks!
Follow up: I just read the Updated Booklet on Herpes and remember my fiance did tell me that 3 times in the past 35 years he’s had abrasions that he attributed to inadequate lubrication. Now I wonder if those abrasions were actually episodes?
It’s certainly possible that the abrasions were actually herpes yes.
It is really not possible to say that no one else got infected without antibody tests to confirm that everyone was negative for HSV 2.
The odds of you contracting herpes from him if he take daily antiviral therapy and you have sex about twice a week (that’s the average in the study patient group), there is about a 5% chance in a year that you would contract herpes from him. That means, if 100 women were in your situation, 5 would contract herpes in a year. It is NOT cumulative.
