Terri- It’s been 5 years since I have been on this forum. Much has happened but regardless here’s what’s happening now. I have been on 1600mg/acyclovir for easily 5+ years. I’ve had 2 sexual experiences in these past 5 and always disclosed. I haven’t had sex for 1.5 years now until this past week. Honestly, I haven’t thought much about Herpes because I haven’t had breakouts for years now…which has been rather freeing. So, the other night I had a great date, dinner, drinks- a few too many. One thing led to another and we slept together. The herpes never entered my mind until the next afternoon after he was gone! Currently, I’m experiencing some soreness just from the sex and some symptoms of what could be a mild breakout. At 56, how could I be so irresponsible? At this point I don’t know if I’ll see him again. What to do? I have HSV-2. It’s located more towards my bum. I’ve never had breakouts up inside my vagina, more on the skin between. The stress and guilt is killing me…to think I could now have put someone at risk is really hard. I know being on suppressive therapy can reduce risk etc. Deep breathe…..
Thanks for your help
You are taking 1600 mg of acyclovir A DAY? That’s a lot of medicine. The FDA-approved dose is 400 twice a day. More, in this case, is not necessarily better.
If you haven’t had sex in a long time, it’s normal to feel sore and at your age, sex can be more painful due to changes in vaginal tissues. Take it from me, I know it to be true.
Was the contact condom protected?
I think the chance that while on acyclovir, with a single sexual encounter, that you transmitted HSV 2, is highly unlikely. How long has it been since this happened? Have you heard from him?
Welcome to the world of fallible people. It happens. Next time you will do things quite differently
