In other words, is an alcohol swab/wipe OK to use? If not, is there some over the counter ointment that is available?
Why would you want to use alcohol on an outbreak? In other words, what is your purpose for doing that?

To keep the area clean and to keep from self-infecting the area around the lesion. Is alcohol a bad thing to use? Is there any ointment that helps heal lesions.
You won’t infect the area around the lesions. Do you mean prevent it from getting a secondary bacterial infection? I have almost never in my career seen that. Or do you mean spreading the herpes to a new location on your body? The virus is in an entire nerve group, not just that one place of skin and it can show up anywhere on that nerve group. If your infection is genital, that means anywhere in the boxer shorts area. If it is oral that means anywhere on the face.

If a person has either HSV1 OR HSV2, what activity would they have to engage in to acquire both?
HSV 1 can be acquired either by kissing or by receiving oral sex or by intercourse. It is often acquired as a child with an adult doing the kissing to a child
HSV 2 is acquired through sexual contact
