recently tested negative for igg hsv 1/2, but received a positive 1.31 igm. I have never had chicken pox or anything. Tested before my last partner and negative for everything.
No outbreaks, but I did have unprotected sex with my (ex) partner 12/24 through a 3/8. He said he had been tested and was clean.
Last exposure was just over 1 month before getting tested. He did say he had a canker sore, and I guess I took his word for it. He had no visible BOs on his face or genitals, and the sore was inside his mouth. He also let me see it and it did not resemble herpes at all.
Anyway, I am pregnant so I am wondering best course of action. I’ll be getting a follow up test with my OB as I saw my PCP.
I have had a weird cough since the day I was tested actually. It has progressed to include a runny nose.
I also want a WB, but unsure when to test.

Never, ever trust an IgM test – many big labs have removed them from the list of available tests and more will be doing so in the future. You want to pay attention only to the IgG or western blot test (which is way better than the IgG, BTW)
If you want to do the blot wait 12 weeks from last unprotected encounter.Terri

My midwife ran the western blot for me and said hsv 1/2 came back negative.
How trustworthy are these results at this time given the history mentioned above (summary: neg before having sex w same person for roughly 3 months. Positive igm test at about 6 wks. Tested hsv 1/2 8/9 w western blot weeks after last encounter).

If your partner actually tested negative, then a western blot at 9 weeks should be adequate. Things inside the mouth are most often canker sores, not herpes. If you don’t believe your partner or are still worried, you can repeat the blot at 12 weeks out, if your midwife would agree.

My ex partner refused to get tested.
1. Given that the western blot said negative at 8/9 weeks post last exposure, and we had unprotected sex from 12/24-3/8, how reliable is the western blot?
2. Do you recommend retesting?

^^^ he refused to get tested after I confronted him w my results. I cannot confirm he ever actually got tested.

Most people who acquire HSV 2 test positive by 9 weeks on the blot. A few take longer. It would have been great if the midwife had waited just a bit longer for your reassurance, but I seriously doubt that you have HSV 2. Since you are pregnant, I’m thinking that for you, another blot down the road will give you greater peace of mind.
