I am getting cold sores every other month to every month. This month, its happening at nearly the same time as last month. I am on Valtrex 500 every day. My doctor has given me a refill for whenever I get outbreaks for 1 gram with the instructions “Take 1 Tablet By Mouth Every Day For 5 Days”

This is really impacting me. I need to be able to work (I kiss people for a living), but I have had to cancel so many bookings because of this. I am also crushed about not being able to kiss my loved ones for 25% of the month.

Is there anything more I can do? What am I doing wrong? How can I figure out what is triggering them? Why am I getting them so frequently even though I am on Valtrex? I don’t think I am super stressed or doing anything strange.

I can’t find an edit, but I wanted to add that I also use abreva as soon as I find out that i am forming a cold sore as well as the valtrex

You should be on daily suppression at a higher dose and see how that goes for you. I would recommend 500 mg twice a day to see how that goes. Where do you get the cold sores?

I get cold sores on my lips, they seem to usually be in the the right location. I asked them to up my dose and they gave me 1g and I don’t seem to have any breakouts since

that’s great. If you do start to break through suppression, split your 1 gram in half and do 500 twice a day vs. 1 gram once a day.
