Hi Terri,
Firstly, thank you for this wonderful website!
Question: Will taking Valacyclovir as directed for 15 days prior to testing produce a false negative result on a HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec01 test?
You have already answered this question on this site (for Valtrex) but I am looking for specific answer that addresses the use of Valacyclovir 500mg. I would really appreciate obtaining a legal reference to prove this or a written reference to a study that confirms your answer.
Should answering this question require you to do more work than is covered in your $25 fee, I am happy to pay you for your time at a higher rate.
Thank you and I appreciate any assistance you can provide.
Valtrex is valacyclovir. Valtrex is the brand name. Valacyclovir is the generic name.
Thank you Gari. Still waiting to hear from Terri on this.
I don’t think we have any actual evidence about this 1) because it hasn’t been studied carefully and 2) the IgG test already misses 30% of HSV 1 and 8% of HSV 2, without any antiviral meds at all, or 3) if there might have been a new infection going on, the timing, not the drug could yield a false negative.
I have had patients who were on longer doses of suppression who did not develop antibodies until we pulled them off suppression. One as long as two years on suppression with no antibody response pulled her off and in 6 weeks she was antibody positive (prior positive swab test).
If this is a legal issue for you, the igG test is not the definitive one to rely upon.
Terri
You’re welcome
Terri
