      Hello Terri,

Id like to start off by wishing you a happy new year and thanking you for all the insight, help and information you provide. The internet is a very scary place for std info and im very thankful that you have made place available for accurate info to be shared.

I am a 25 yr old male and had my first sexual encounter about 10-11 weeks ago. The entire thing was safe to the point where she even performed oral on me with a condom on. I performed very light oral on her without protection.

The unfortunate part is that around 3/4 through the encounter we decided to change condom (to be safe) but instead of using regular lube we used coconut oil. The possible exposure was around max. 10 min and I only learned several weeks later that condoms and oils are a no no.

I have gotten tested at 5 weeks and all is negative which helps me stay much calmer although I dont think I tested for HSV.

I have not had any symptoms except for quick shooting pain and minimal tingling on the genital area. Sometimes they occur on arms, lower legs and feet but much more often in the the genital area.

This has only come forth over approx. the past 5 days and has happened much less frequently over 48 hrs.

I saw an urgent care doctor at an std clinic yesterday and he physically examined my genital area and mentioned that the symptoms are not usually associated with herpes and that although possible, it’s unlikely to have an initial outbreak this late (10.5 weeks).

Before leaving he told me that he’d like for me to give a urine sample and said he’s confident about it not being herpes and that I should do the blood test whenever I feel comfortable (going next week).

I was wondering if you know what the urine test could be useful for and if getting a blood test at 11 weeks is okay?

Have you encountered people with similar symptoms? If yes, in your experience was it attributed to another condition or even just high stress & anxiety?

Thanks! very sorry for the long message

The urine test was likely for gonorrhea and chlamydia, not herpes.
The symptoms that you are having, without an sores, is extremely unlikely to be herpes and though oil and condoms are not a perfect match, I think it is highly unlikely that with only 10 minutes of intercourse, you contracted anything at all. Good job with using the condom for oral sex.

      Hi Terri,

      Thanks for that reassurance.

I got tested for hsv 1 & 2 around the 13 or 14 week mark (don’t remember the exact date) using a blood test. I believe the test was igG since the nurse kept emphasizing and saying “this blood test isn’t very good at detecting type 1 but is very effective for detection of type 2”.

The clinic I go to takes roughly 7-10 days to get the results back and has a policy of not calling patients who’s results are negative.

I did not receive a call and so my results are negative.

I have now reached roughly 24 weeks since the original encounter.

I have 3 small last questions just so that I can ease my mind and move on once and for all.

About 1 day ago I found about 3-4 spots on each buttocks (they look like pimples in my opinion). They were in the same general area at least a few inches apart and not huddled close to each other. There was no pain, no blistering and weren’t raised above the skin and fluid filled as shown in some pictures that can be found online. In fact it was difficult to find them by passing my hand over them. The color was very a faint red just like when skin is rubbed too much.

I managed to pop one and it now feels a little bruised and the rest seem to have significantly shrunk and some cleared up overnight. I did put some moisturizing cream afterwards to hydrate the skin but other than that I do not use any creams or medications.

Do herpes lesions last much longer than 1 – 3 days?

Should I have tested at 16 weeks instead of week 13-14? Should I get tested now?

If I understood correctly from online reading, the blood test is around 92% certain at 12 weeks. For the 8% that the test misses, is it mostly due to people taking antivirals?

Thank you very much for your help Terri! 🙂

      Hi Terri,

Just a quick update. Its now 2 days since I noticed the spots on buttocks and they all pretty much went away except the one I picked at and caused a bruise.

I think im just freaking myself out by over examining myself and letting my thoughts run wild and afraid of the chances of a false negative.

I also understand the negative effects of constantly thinking like this and will seek some therapy to get over these fears.

      Thank you!

Normally, yes, longer than 1-3 days – not every time, but usually longer

13-14 weeks is as good as it is going to get, no worries there.

it is 92% sensitive for HSV 2, 70% for HSV 1. The lack of sensitivity is NOT mainly due to antiviral use, no, it just misses it.

      Hi Terri,

I’ve purchased a round of follow up questions since I just wanted a few more little clarifications.

      1) In your experience have you seen many cases of false negative igg tests using WB as confirmation (assuming tests were done at proper time)? Or if i understood correctly the majority of “healthy” people will at least be in the low positive range by 12 to 16 weeks and be confirmed as a false positive or true positive by WB.

      2) I live in montreal canada and there is a lab that does immunoblot testing, is that a “close enough” test to the WB?

      3) I’ve unfortunately been super analyzing my genital area and noticed a minuscule red bump on the shaft of my penis. required a magnifying glass and ultimately seemed to be an irritated hair follicle. It lasted a total of a day and a half. I have never had lesions during the incubation period and have not had any other encounters, yet my mind is still stuck on this 6 months later.

My last question is in order to get my head off the fear of a false negative would you suggest a WB? If yes, do you know of any labs in Canada that do this or is it only through the university of Washington?

Thank you Terri your advice and knowledge is very much appreciated.

      Hi Terri,

I wanted to give you an update on what i thought would be possible symptoms.

I realized that I get friction spots on my buttocks due to cycling. Since i just restarted for 2019, i had forgotten about that and totally misinterpreted it.

Im pretty embarrassed for having come back here in a panic thinking that I all of a sudden have symptoms and stuff. And I apologize for it as well.

I’ve read a lot about herpes on asha, this forum and some other sites and was wondering if you could just confirm what i’ve gathered.

      1) transmission from female to male is roughly 4% (assuming sex 2-4x per week over an entire year)
      2) condoms are not perfect but still significantly reduce the risk of contracting herpes.
      3) igg blood testing at 14 weeks is accurate enough.
      4) WB is really only necessary for confirmatory testing and people with a high risk sexual history (many different partners over time)

Therefore, can i rest easy considering the transmission rate, the fact that I only had a one time encounter with minimal time using what was perceived to be a broken condom and a negative igg blood test at 14 weeks? With these factors considered, the igg is good & accurate enough and a WB is not necessary?

      Thank you!

It isn’t about whether you made antibody, it’s about whether the IgG test will pick it up or not – it’s a test issue, not a “you” issue UNLESS you are taking daily antiviral medicine

      2) I live in montreal canada and there is a lab that does immunoblot testing, is that a “close enough” test to the WB?

No, it is just another form of IgG test

      3) I’ve unfortunately been super analyzing my genital area and noticed a minuscule red bump on the shaft of my penis. required a magnifying glass and ultimately seemed to be an irritated hair follicle. Anything that requires a magnifying glass and last a day and half is extremely unlikely to be herpes.

As far as I know it is only done at UW but if you can find someone to draw and spin your blood in Canada, we can get it done

      Hi Terri,

My anxiety is significantly reduced but im entering a new relationship and I just need to clear this overlaying worry.

Not gonna lie, these tests scare the hell out of me but I think its the best way forward.

I called my clinic to make sure i didnt miss any calls and the receptionist confirmed theres nothing positive in my file.

Id basically like to buy piece of mind and clear this 8% of uncertainty but i dont know how to go about getting a western blot more specifically getting my blood drawn in montreal.

I tried making a profile on the evideo thing but im in canada and it only has a list of states in the USA. I was wondering if you could help me with setting up an appointment.

      Thank you

Sorry for all the lengthy posts.

I just wanted to add that im currently taking a medication for acid reflux. It is a proton pump inhibitor called pantoprazole.

Would this have any effect on a western blot test?

      Thanks 😊

that med has no influence on the western blot, no
So what if you posted an address on evisit that is not your home address, but rather an address in the US somewhere – perhaps a friend’s address or an address of a restaurant. I believe that people have done that in the past and it has worked for people who live in Canada. Try that and if it doesn’t work, we’ll talk a different way. We will be in Ireland starting tomorrow for three weeks but I am still able to do video conferencing.
