Hi Terri,
Male, 25 yrs old.
I’ll jump straight in. I am based in Ireland and find the doctors quick to brush off the fact that I may have contracted herpes. I have convinced them to run a blood test which I am due the result for next week but it has been eating me up waiting. I had unprotected for a brief minute max with a female with unknown status. 3 weeks later I was getting this constant urge to urinate, sometimes 4 times within the hour, no pain just very uncomfortable if I tried holding it. This went away after 3- 4 days but came back two weeks later. This time it lasted a week, only time I was getting relief was at night when I would go to bed. After it went away the second time I noticed a slight clear discharge and the penis tip seemed to be constantly wet at the tip, again no pain or foul smell.I noticed a small bump half way down my penis shaft which looked like an ingrown hair or follictis. Doctor had a look and advised this was nothing to worry about and that it looked nothing like herpes. This stayed for 3 weeks without change and disappeared gradually. I got checked for all bacterial STD’s and all came back negative. All I am waiting for is the hsv1 and 2 test results. The discharge lasted 2 weeks and has now cleared completely. Last week i began to get what seemed like a fever, hot and cold shivers and a general tired feeling, lower abdominal feeling of unwell. I also noticed my buttocks, quads and calves and ankles seemed to be a little tender on both legs( like the feeling after a strenuous gym workout) which wasn’t the case as I haven’t been active lately. This lasted 5 days and is now getting less and less as the days go on. I have had no visible outbreaks from what I can see or feel. One thing i did notice was my rectal area was slightly sore after a short walk and when i showered and water ran over my rectal area I felt a brief sting, but this only lasted a day and has not been sensitive or sore to such since. nothing visible the next day -

Also I went the doc on another occasion with a slight itch in my groin, was advised it was fungal and given cream.. This cleared pretty quick with the cream given . In your experience does this sound like an outbreak? If I was to get a rectal breakout with it only be sore for one day? Also I have never had anal sex. I am a straight male.
Sexual encounter Feb 23rd
First frequent urination was March 16th,
Second frequent urination April 1st
Leg tenderness and lower back since May 1st to date

This sounds absolutely nothing like herpes to me. And if your antibody test comes back positive for HSV 1, I would recommend that you not jump to the conclusion that it is genital. One minute of unprotected intercourse is unlikely to result in anything honestly, but bacterial agents are the most likely cause of your symptoms. Were you tested for mycoplasma genitalium?

Thanks for the quick response! Yes I was checked for mycoplasma and was negative.. a sample was also taken from the urethra and viewed under the microscope which was clear.. the past two days I’ve had real achy joints, hip, knees etc and a headache which comes and goes.. Could the stress and panic of all this be bringing on what I believe to be symptoms from reading so much? Would an outbreak appear and clear complete within two to three days leaving no trace?

You could be ill with many things or stress of this is making you notice all sorts of things you would not normally notice. Recurrences of herpes could last three days and clear but new infection? Almost certainly not. I think you’ve settled on herpes as a cause of your symptoms but that seems extremely unlikely to me, given all that you have said here.

Hi Terri, I have topped up my subscription.. just a follow up I received the results of my bloods at 8.5 weeks and all that came back was positive for HSV1.. do you reckon that a test at 8/9 weeks is a good enough indication? As I have read that hsv1 can delay antibodies for a blood test.
I’m just going to give you a summary of current symptoms.. aching calves and buttocks which is very mild, sometimes aches in knees and hips, when I’m having these symptoms I get a mild headache.. I am also getting irritated rectum, when I look it appears to be irrated and is slightly sore but no visible blisters from what I can see. If I was having a rectal breakout would this be incredibly sore?? As it only has been an irritated feeling as opposed to sore .. also I have a slight tingle in my testicles which last a couple of seconds every now and again.. and a twitch which I get occasionally in calves and quad area.. appreciate your input .. Thanks

And one last question how often would you see someone test negative for hsv2 at 8/9 weeks but positive at 12? Thanks

Most people will seroconvert by 8-9 weeks but perhaps 10-15% will serconvert later. I suggest that people do a final test at 12 weeks out if they are still concerned and worried.
Yes, a rectal breakout would hurt, especially with bowel movements.Terri

Last post regarding my concerns.. I have been to the doctor multiple times at this stage and the doctor has advised he can find nothing herpetic visually.. my main symptoms now are buttock tenderness which comes and goes down each leg, irritated rectum with the feeling needing to have a bowel movement when sitting, but when I go nothing to pass .. and twitching which occurs in my buttocks and calves.. the only possible lession I may of had is a small pimple like spot which appeared on the shaft it never burst or changed over 3 to 4 weeks… it reappeared a few weeks later and I popped it like a pimple.. I showed the doctor on both occasions and advised this wasn’t herpetic.. in your opinion Is it possible hsv1 is Genital and causing me all of these issues? I’ve been having mild headaches, over all fatigue and run down feeling, fever at one point which lasted 4 days, achey body .. I have never had cold sores nor as a child growing up

I actually do not believe that HSV one is causing all your problems. I don’t know what it might be but I doubt that herpes is the culprit
