      Hello
My first question is. I am afraid I may have contracted HSV2 4 weeks ago. Wearing a condom but the contact was with someone who has a very good chance of having it. That said I have had no sores or blisters on my genitals but I have had a rash between my upper thigh and scrotum (both sides) also stinging feeling under both testicles. My concern is I have a 2 year old daughter that I have half the week. And I am afraid I may have touched or rubbed the area with out even thinking and then changed her diaper. What are the chances of transmitting it to her this way? I am going crazy and it’s all I think about 24/7

I’m so glad you wrote to me so that I can reassure you that the risk of infecting your daughter in this situation is as close as one can get to zero. You had a single contact, right? And used a condom? In that situation, the risk of acquiring herpes is also extremely low. And you don’t even know that she has HSV 2,right? The rash sounds far more like a fungal infection than herpes. I’ve never seen herpes in that crease but I have seen a ton of fungal infections there. You may wish to try some over the counter antifungal medicines to see if that helps. HSV 2 is a sexually transmitted infection. It is not transmitted via adults changging diapers or bathing their children, though many parents, like you worry about this.

Thanks for getting back to me Terri. Yes it was a one time contact with a condom. But the person has had many partners. I know people go crazy thinking about this and I am no different. I have been on the Internet non stop since this has happened. Just a follow up about the symptoms. I was not really to concerned about the rash as much as I was about the stinging in the scrotum. I am prone to heat rash so I am used to seeing that. I have never had that stinging in the scrotum before though. It lasted about a week and then went away on its own. No sores that I could see unless they we closer to the Anis and I just could not see them. Most things I read say 80Percent of people have no symptoms or mild symptoms with no sores. Just seems like to much of coincidence that I got this feeling 2weeks after that contact. And that it went away on its own. Around the same time I was experiencing that I noticed my daughter had a few red bumps on her bum. They were spread out not clusters. Not really a rash just s few isolated red marks. Almost like bug bites. I have also read that this could be a mild symptom. Needles to say I am freaking out. This little girl is my life. And the thought of this happening is making me crazy. Can you please speak to the symptoms.

I still do NOT think that your symptoms are consistent with herpes but you can certainly test for herpes. This sounds more fungal than herpetic. Have you done any testing yet?
Your daughter’s symptoms also sound nothing like herpes, honestly, they do not.
I would be willing to be very huge sums of money that neither of you has herpes. Millions, if I had them.

Thanks Terri I am certainly going to get tested but it’s only been a little over 4 weeks and since I have no sores as of yet I feel like I should wait a little longer to do a blood test. Just a few last things I promise. I am guessing if it is fungal the chances of that being passed that way would not happen either? Also if I was to touch my area down there when it was irritated but again no sores. Would it be possible to be shedding? could that make a sore develop on my hand at all? The problem is I am now looking at every little mark on my body and I noticed I had a something on my knuckle that could have been a blister but it could just have easily been me burning myself in the toaster oven. Honestly the first two weeks after this happened I was more concerned about HIV so I was not looking for herpes symptoms. Also assuming the worst if those bumps on her bottom were mild herpes symptoms and her mother was rubbing lotion on them and had direct contact with them with her hands and somehow contacted it herself. Would her mothers symptoms show up on her hands or her private area. I know these seem like crazy questions but I just really don’t know how any of this works. I think you are providing a great service for people whether they have it or not. Thanks again

Even if it is herpes, which is probably is not, if you touch it it would not make a sore develop on your hand, no. First, I don’t believe for a moment that the bumps on your daughter’s bottom are herpes. And even if they were, which they they are not, her mother would not acquire herpes on her hands. And thus she would not get it on her genitals. I know you don’t know much about this so it’s fine to ask questions, of course. But you need to know that your mind is racing way ahead of reality. You are being a concerned dad and of course fearing the worst, but it isn’t happening, really it isn’t.
