At this level of index value, I think there is greater than 95% chance that you will confirm as positive for HSV-2 if a Western blot is done. However, one of my colleagues at the University of Washington recently had a patient with an index value of greater than 14 on his HSV-2 IgG and he did not confirm by Western blot. I am unclear about why someone with that high an index value had a Western blot confirmation but I suspect it was something about his lack of risk that prompted them to do the Western blot. I guess that’s my long way of saying that if you think infection is unlikely, giving your past sexual history, you may wish to obtain the Western blot, knowing that the odds are high that you will confirm as positive.
