I am assuming that the correct test was done for HSV 2, the IgG. The number you have provided for me sounds like an IgG index value.
If that is an IgG index value then the likelihood that you have HSV 2 is very high indeed, I am sorry to tell you.
The nurse is incorrect – about 80% of those infected with HSV 2 don’t recognize symptoms consistent with genital herpes.
About 25% of women in the US between the ages of 14-49 have HSV 2 infection so if you truly are infected, you are not alone. I would encourage you to read the Updated Herpes Handbook on this website, it’s free.
Also, did they test you for HSV 1 or just HSV 2? Do you know what your HSV 1 score was?
If you want confirmatory testing, there is a test available called the herpes western blot.
May I ask about your sexual history? How many lifetime sexual partners have you had? Have you contacted any past partners about this news?
I know you are frantic right now but I will tell you that many many people live very full happy lives and have great sex lives, even though they have genital herpes. They have children, they have people who love them, they get past this very difficult news and move on. You will too. But it takes some times to deal with this diagnosis.
Please feel free to ask me other questions.
