Hi Teri,

I am HSV 1 pos and HSV 2 neg confirmed via western blot in Dec 2018. I only test via western blot now as I had several positive 3.5+ Igg test only to confirm negative via WB 12 weeks post my last exposure of 2018.

I want to keep this status so I only have protected sex with any partners whether new or old.

What is my risk if I id I recently had condom protected MSM intercourse where I was the insertive partner? They claim to be HSV negative but without testing I will assume they were positive.

I ensured my condom was properly sized to avoid slippage and rolled down to the base of my penis, I also inspected for any sores or lesions in areas that would not be covered by the condom, and/or the perianal area.

With these practices, and with no Guarantee of course do you feel that I jeopardized my negative HSV 2 status?

Did the condom provide significant protection?

Does viral shedding occur at just the penis and anus or the inner butt cheeks as well?

Thanks !

You did a terrific job of practicing safe sex – good for you! I believe the condom provided excellent protection for your negative HSV 2 status.

Shedding occur at the penis and anus, but not inner butt checks as the skin there is too thick for virus to be able to get out.

Hi Terri i have a few follow up questions

1.Do men shed from the penis and anus or the perianal area as well? What exactly is the perianal area?
Yes, they shed from all of those locations. The perianal area is the area of your body between the scrotum and anus

2. How common is acquisition of HSV from one time protected ( condom rolled to base) sexual intercourse with no lesions present?
Very close to zero

3. If I continue to use condoms properly each time I have sex can I reasonably expect to remain HSV2 negative?
Yes

4. Would you recommend testing or be worried after a 1 time condom protected sexual event?
I don’t recommend testing in this situation, no.

Are herpes lesions fairly identifiable and do they always or most always break open before healing ?
Yes

Are condoms around 90% protective against HSV2 for any onetime sex act (even for men)?
Even better than that, yes

How much of a risk is it that one would contract HSV2 from single act of protected anal sex with properly fitting condom and no lesions given the shedding locations for men?
Very close to zero

Have you seen many cases of people contracting HSV from 1 time condom protected intercourse? Particularly women or the receptive partner?
I have perhaps seen 1 or 2?

Since my last negative blot test if my sexual practices Have been safe including visual inspection for lesions before engaging in sex, properly fitting condoms rolled to penis base before any intercourse and with no symptoms is it fair to continue to assume negative HSV2 status?
It is fair!

Terri
