the IgG test for HSV 1 is unreliable – your cold sore history is far more reliable and indicates that you have HSV 1 infection. And yes, it is normal to have it vary
The IgG tests in general also have problems with false positives. Especially in people who have low positive index values. Any real positive means that you are infected with that type of HSV and potentially infectious to others, regardless of index value.
You are an excellent candidate for the western blot. Do it.
