No, I don’t think you’d had it for nine months – I suspect it was a new infection. The timing and symptoms definitely suggest guy 2. Once a person has ever had a cold sore in their lifetime, they can shed virus for the rest of their life. It will happen less often without cold sores, but it happens. Thankfully, HSV 1 genital infection is usually quite benign, rarely recurs and rarely sheds, after the first year of having the infection.
