By the time someone has had HSV 1 genitally for about 2 years, the average number of days that they shed virus is 4 in a year. If you are having one to two outbreaks a year, that is more than the average, which is one every other year. Do you know that your partner is HSV 1 negative? has he tested or has he ever had a cold sore? About half the population in the US has HSV 1 so it might be good to find out. If he is very worried about transmission of HSV 1, you could go on suppression, yes. But since shedding is so infrequent already, we don’t know how much benefit that would provide. it certainly wouldn’t hurt.
