HSV 1 is the cause of cold sores which can appear in the nose or on the edge of the lip and people can have this infection since childhood, without even knowing they have it. Without cold sores or genital sores, it isn’t possible to know where the infection is. About half the US population between 14 and 49 has HSV 1 infection so very common. Don’t let the term “herpes” indicate a sexually transmitted infection, when we are talking about HSV 1. That may or may not be true.
