I also find it really strange that I have had such a different experience with this virus than most others. My symptoms have been ongoing for 7 solid months now. I’ve had 7 doctors/specialists tell me that these aren’t symptoms of HSV, but it’s the only thing that I’ve tested positive for and I’ve been to 5 in-person doctor appointments/exams spoken with 3 physicians and specialist online as well.

I did have a neurologist online tell me that HSV-2 can cause nerve issues in my thighs, and I think that he may be the most accurate of anyone, because that’s what it feel like. Nerves.

I’m a healthy guy in my mid-forties, never tested positive for any STI. I was tested for Hep A, B, and C, Chlamydia, Ghonorrhea, HIV and Syphilis. All negative. I also had an ultrasound for hernia, which was negative and I saw a Urologist who said it was probably some kind of bladder infection that couldn’t be detected with a urine test.

I took Valacyclovir, Ciprofloxacin, Doxycycline, and Oxybutynin. Nothing helped.

I still have groin pain/pinching and inner thigh burning symptoms on most days. It’s definitely worse after a night of drinking alcohol and also caffeine makes it worse as well.

That’s not really a question, but I’m hoping that it might help others with similar symptoms who are confused.

It’s like constant prodrome symptoms with no actual outbreak. It has gotten better since October, as the pain at first was unbearable. But it’s still really uncomfortable and I don’t wish it upon anyone.

One side note: I’m not really sure how to tell if I’ve been having “outbreaks” every week or every couple of days, because I’ve still never had any visible lesions. I’m assuming that the initial symptoms I had in October was one outbreak, and I’ve had the burning thighs, groin pinching pain ever since, although not as intense.

    Hi Terri,
Well I was retested for HSV-2 last week and my IgG level was 13.0 which is 5.6 points less than what it was when I tested in October which was 18.6. So, I guess that’s pretty clear now that I do in fact have it. Good news was I’ve been tested for everything else as well and they were all negative.

So, I’ve got that going for me, which is nice 😉

Now that I’ve come to terms with this I have a couple of questions:

What causes IgG levels to fluctuate and what do the numbers coincide with?

If I take Valacyclovir, is there any evidence that 1000mg per day helps to reduce viral shedding any more than taking 500mg per day. Obviously I would rather take 500mg per day if possible.

If I want to collect a swab for PCR testing while I’m having symptoms, what steps do I need to take to get that going with you?

    Thanks

Ok thanks! I have thought about getter another test since I’ve stopped taking the Biotin, but I haven’t yet.

I’m curious to learn more about the daily viral swabbing. I’d really like to know if these sensations are due to that. How can I start doing that on my own?

    Hi Terri,
So It’s been 6 months now and I’m still having regular symptoms of tingling/itchy genitals and pinching groin pain, burning inner and backs of thighs, still no lesions. Although symptoms do seem to get 70-80% better throughout the week, they are never completely gone. It seems to get worse on Sunday and Monday after weekends when I’ve had alcoholic beverages.

I did visit a Urologist, who had me try Oxybutinen, but it also did not help.

At this point he said he thinks it could be Interstitial Cystitis. The only thing is that everything I’ve been tested for is negative other than HSV-2. I’m probably going to take another test just for verification.

I started seeing someone so I started taking 500mg of valacyclovir, thinking that maybe since symptoms aren’t as intense as when they first started back in November, it would alleviate the symptoms. Well, it seems as though they are still about the same after a week of taking the anti-viral medication.

    Here are my questions:
Have you met anyone in a similar situation?

Did they find relief with any other type of medication besides Vacyclovir?

Have you heard of anyone having luck in suppressing symptoms with any Traditional Chinese Medicines?

    Thank you for your time!

It’s a decision you’ll have to make but I can tell you my story.

Five years ago I had an encounter with a woman and a few days later I had pain, burning, itchy thighs and crawling feelings in my groin area. Doc tested for Chlamydia and Ghonorhea, gave me a shot of Racefin and sent me on my way. I had no lesions or anything other than the pain symptoms. It sucked. A week passed and they told me there wasn’t anything they could do to help, so I waited it out. I went back a few weeks later and my symptoms had cleared up. My doctor said we could test for HSV if I wanted but it was up to me. If it was a new infection, it may not show up on IgG anyhow. If I tested and it was negative, then that’s great, but if I test and it’s positive, that changes the whole mentality. He said, if I get noticeable lesions come back. I took that advice and didn’t look back.

I dated several woman in the last 5 years, none of whom I’m aware of having transmitted HSV to. One of those women I dated for 2 years. If I had told her I had it, would she have still dated me? I don’t know.

I had an encounter last October and the doctor in the urgent care gave me an HSV test and I didn’t have visible symptoms and it was positive. It sucks. I really kinda wish she hadn’t done that, because now, I feel an inner guilt, that I should tell anyone I’m involved with, even though it may not show up again for another 5 years, or maybe more. It may not spread to anyone else either. It makes me think about who I can date, and who wouldn’t want to date me. Dating is hard enough without thinking you have something you might spread to someone you care about.

It’s a weird way to think about it, but unfortunately, sex is not perfect, sex is not always clean, and it’s not our fault. We’re just humans and we want to have sex.

There’s a good chance that the person you may be dating has HSV 1 or 2 or both, so I think that testing yourself and learning you are positive can create an obstacle that you don’t need.

    Hi Terri,
I wanted to follow-up and see if you might have any additional ideas for me. I think I still have a couple follow-ups from my initial payment. If not, let me know 🙂

It’s been 13 weeks now since this began and I’m still having tingling in genitals, itchy thighs, mild groin pain. But I’ve had NO LESIONS. And I’ve checked everyday, because it feels like they could be there, but they aren’t.

The doctor thought it may be a hernia, but we tested and did an ultrasound for that and it was negative. We’ve done full blood work and tested for Clamydia, Gonorhea and HIV and they are negative.

    My questions are:
Is this likely me constantly shedding the virus for 13 weeks or is this potentially an after-effect of having it?
They says the first outbreak is the worst, but I had similar symptoms 5 years ago and it went away in 5 weeks and I never felt anything like it until now. Have you seen anything like this before?
Does a longer outbreak (like 13 weeks) maybe mean my next outbreak won’t happen for a long time?

Any other ideas you have about my situation would be greatly appreciated. Even if there are posts you could refer me to where people have had extended symptoms like mine.

    Thank you,
Telluride is awesome by the way!

Hi Terri, Have you had a chance to look at my questions? I noticed a few others had been addressed.
